Our annual Novena in honor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will hold a special significance  as we celebrate this Centenary Year of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima.  The theme for our Novena will be “Our Lady of Fatima Speaks to Us Today, a Timeless Message.”  Most people may not realize the deep connection that the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima have with Carmel and especially the Order of Discalced Carmelite Nuns.  Besides the fact of the Messages of Fatima being directed towards prayer, the Rosary and special devotion to Our Lady, penance, and the salvation of souls–the very essence and life of a Carmelite–in the October 13th, 1917 Apparition Our Blessed Mother appeared to Sr. Lucia precisely as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, holding the brown Scapular.  Indeed, the prayer of the Rosary and the Brown Scapular are inseparable, as Lucia reminded us.  Another important connection with Carmel is that Lucia, one of the three visionaries of Fatima eventually became a Discalced Carmelite Nun for over 50 years, where she was sanctified and died a holy death.  We will also have the special joy of celebrating a Mass in honor of Jacinta and Francisco Marto, the first siblings to be canonized together in the history of the Church!

Father Thomas Reeves, O.C.D., our Novena celebrant and homilist, is a friar from the Western Province of the Order of Discalced Carmelites.  Born and raised in San Diego, California, Father Thomas entered the Discalced Carmelite Order in 1999 and made his Solemn Profession of vows on Jan 1st, 2006.

Father Thomas completed his philosophical and theological studies at Mt. Angel Seminary in Mt. Angel, Oregon.  He received a B.A. degree in Philosophy and received M.A., M.Div., and S.T.B., degrees in Theology.  He was ordained to the Priesthood on June 13th, 2008 in San Jose, California, by Archbishop Jean Sleiman, O.C.D., our Carmelite brother and Archbishop of Baghdad.  (You may recall that Archbishop Sleiman was here for our Mt. Carmel Novena in July of 2013.)

After ordination, Father was assigned to Santa Cruz Parish in Tucson, Arizona, where he later served for several years as Pastor.  He is a member of the Provincial Council of the Western Province of Discalced Carmelites and is currently the Rector and Student Master of the Carmelite House of Studies, in Mt. Angel, Oregon.
